Who is the real king of hip hop? When I say real I mean REAL. Think old school for starters…..??
I was asked this question and I replied "Jam Master Jay". This is coming from a documentary I saw. It could be more of a turntablism type of doc. I'm not sure......
There isn’t one king in hiphop. Hiphop is like a democracy of leaders. There are too many greats. What one legendary rapper didn’t bring to the table another legend did.
Rakim
Krs-One
Big Daddy Kane
Jam Master Jay
I could see Jam Master Jay as a pioneer of hip-hop. But if i had to pick the king of hip-hop, it would be Jay-Z. He’s without a doubt the most successful rapper of all time. And he’s been at the top longer than anyone else.
well of course Tupac
In my eyes there’s absolutely no way to name a "Real King of Hip Hop’. If you look at old skool you got Doug E. Fresh, Eric B. & Rakim, Kool Moe Dee, in between, Pac, Biggie, Bone, Jigga, Nas (list goes on and on). it all really just depends on what you like. Some of the most raw old skool albums are:
Kool Moe Dee- Knowledge is King
Doug E. Fresh- Oh My God!
Eric B. & Rakim- Paid in Full
Yo check em out. There’s no callin it.
That’s like askin what makes flowers beautiful. The seed, the soil, the food, the atmoshphere, all of the above…..? No callin it, all we know is it keeps thriving, gettin better and better.
There is no real king of hip-hop. I agree with my man Aleister, there are too many greats and they all have different styles. Think of Tupac Biggie Nas Eminem Jay-z JMJ, KRS-1.
In terms of sales, Jay-z has sold the most albums to date, but Pac sold half as many in the 5-6 years he was around.
When I was a kid, it was Kurtis Blow…I just think the king has to be an emcee to start this. Kings don’t play the back. RUN DMC and JMJ were the Kings of rock and they expanded hip hop during their reign to MTV, pop radio and mainstream (not sure if that’s a good or bad thing). What Im suggesting during different times hip hop has had different kings. From 86-89 Rakim was indeed king. KRS never was a king. He said him self :
Who is weaker
the king or the teacher
it’s not a bout a salary
it’s all about reality
Teachers teach and do the world good
Kings just rule
and most are never understood
if you were to rule
or govern a certain industry
all in the room right now
would be in misery
no one would get along or sing a song
cause everyone’d be singing for the king
am i wrong
So KRS never wanted to be the king. He was a prophet. The battle for supremacy killed Pac and Biggie. Since they are dead…though their words may live…they are not the kings.
I think the key lines to weigh this on is "it’s not about a salary, it’s all about reality" If it were about a salary the king would be T.I., Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Kanye, or Eminem…
But since its about reality and not singing for the king but the people…the one constant king since 92 that has been superior as an emcee and speaking for us…is the REAL KING OF HIP HOP
N-A-S…Nas…Nasty Nas…Nasir Jones…he is a hybrid king and teacher who sells units too.
2Pac of all time
NaS for alive
