I’m gonna hijack this a little and remind everyone that, in the UK at least, 45s are making a comeback. More than 1 million were sold (last year?), compared to a paltry 180 thousand a few years back.
Still, the last 45 I bought before I bought my first CD (which was, I think, something like ‘The White Room’ by the KLF). Then I bought some CD singles (first one being ‘Something Good’ by the Utah Saints, if memory serves).
Never really bought cassette singles (’No More Tears’, Ozzy Osborne, is the only one I can remember right now), for some odd reason.
My final 2c - the future is not MP3s that are downloaded, except perhaps for the single market. Albums are more than just the music, it’s the whole product. The sleeve, the artwork, etc. etc.
Having said that, the MP3 market is perfect for ‘throwaway’ music that you get tired of. Like most of the stuff on popular radio - now and again you get the Artic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Limp Bizkit, or whoever, throwing up music that stays with you, but in the main, it’s bubblegum. Loses it’s flavor : time to move on.

I couldn’t remember exactly which record I played but surely it was some 80’s songs.
"Puttin’ on the Ritz", by Taco in 1983.
………wasn’t there cassette in between 45s and Cd’s……..
"Puff the Magic Dragon/Blowin’ in the Wind" by Peter, Paul, and Mary. However, I listened to 8 tracks and reel-to-reels, and only later bought cassettes, before I bought cd’s.
*blushes*… am I the only one who listened to other stuff between the 45 and the cassette?
i actually dont think i ever bought a 45 in my whole entire life… i got boxes of cassettes yeah but a 45??? nah.. cant quite remember what the last cassette i bought tho… twas ages ago…
I hate to break this to you - but people still do use record players, and people still buy records for them…

The last 8-track I bought was the Guess Who Share the Land (quadraphonic).
The last cassette i purchased was Crosby Stills and Nash "De JA Vue".
The last LP I purchased was Pink Floyd.
Quite a few steps though between the 45 and the CD. Next format MP3 digital format (Flash drives and Itunes)
