I have never bought one or used one before, but I just found boxes of old records in my dad's storage unit and want to buy one now so I can use the records...what should I look for when buying one? I looked a little online but don't understand what they're talking about in any of the descriptions...they keep using all these numbers and I have no idea what they mean...
So, and I'm sure it sounds lame, (but whatever) could you please explain it all to me?
Thanks!

The thing in question is an antique Ace R/C Pulse Commander radio. It is a single stick transmitter on 27.145 MHz. It was functioning just fine a month ago. Dad and I opened it up to replace the stick assembly since the original is in poor mechanical shape due to the age of the plastic frame.
To do this required:
1) Unsoldering the wire leads between the PC board and the potentiometer (for movement of the stick) mounted on the stick assembly. The locations of the wires were marked on the pot before removal.
2) Removal of the antenna mount from the stick assembly to mount it on the new assembly. The antenna is bolted to the plastic stick assembly with a wire lead between it and the pc board.

We also replaced the switch with a different one of the same type...sliding switch with 6 posts on the back.

Replacing the stick did not work (pot on the replacement assembly was too different) so we re-installed the original one and resoldered all the wires back to their original locations. Powered up the transmitter and its matching radio system and got no response. The radio is fine because another transmitter on a different 27 MHz frequency operated the radio.

We checked for continuity and/or power on the leads between:
1) Battery and the switch
2) Switch and the PC board
3) Antenna and the PC board
4) Pot and the PC board
Everything checked out perfectly.
You can view the schematic in the pdf file at this link:

My dad and I really want to get it fixed because it is sooo much fun to fly but since everything checks out and should be working we're not sure what's wrong. Do any of you have any idea what the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Replaced all batteries today with fresh Duracells. The others I was using were new in package Rayovacs. Anyway, after powering up the system the batteries in the transmitter (6 AA batts) started heating up VERY fast, talking temps hot enough to cause a very mild burn in a little under 3 seconds. Dad says its a dead short. We have no oscilliscope and don't know anyone who does. Can't take the system to a shop for testing because it will cost more than the purchase price of a modern R/C system which we have several of. We do have other antique transmitters which work perfectly unfortunately they are not on the same frequency as the system we are trying to fix. Dad and I have decided to replace the crystal in the receiver so it will function with the other antique transmitters we have.

This system is exactly like the system we were working on:

These are like the other transmitters we have: http://www.rchalloffame.org/Exhibits/Exhibit26/index.html

...and dad has one of these actuators and I flew it once, VERY different. Designed for 3 channels using the silver transmitters in the 2nd link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBSRmlIGSWQ

Anyway, dad and I try to keep these old systems funcitioning because they are fun to fly.

My Dad said he used to listen to his record player. What is that??

I'm 27 and for the last 10 years or so I've been interested in purchasing a record player, I used to mess around with my Dad's growing up but that eventually broke over the years. I have alot of his and my mom's records from the 60's and 70's that I'd love to be able to listen to again, along with some of my own that I'm collecting.

I don't want to spend too much money, maybe 300.00 at the most. I don't have much experience in this audio field so I'm not even sure where to start, I know I had a turntable, a receiver and some speakers back then, not sure if that's still the same setup. Any help would be welcome. Thanks!

Okay well to start off, and I don't know if this is related or anything, but my dad bought an antique shelf with an antique record player (really old one, the kind that played cylinder records, rather than disc records). I just state that because I hear old items can cause a haunting wherever they are. Well not alot has happened at all really. So most of you will probably think I'm just wasting time, but for one, I walked into the bathroom and noticed the roll of toilet paper was sitting on the floor, in front of the door, when I last left it on the shelf. Then just now, my dogs (which are older puppies, not quite adult) were sleeping on the couch and out of nowhere, they both jump up, barking like crazy, running into the next room and also making whimpering noises like crazy, as if someone hurt them or they were really scared. I had to calm them down. What do you think?
And now one of them keeps going into the kitchen and barking at nothing.

So I could not wait for the snow to melt, so I tried using my son's radio controlled helicopter in the living room. I soon realized that it was a mistake when I crashed into the mantle and took out Great Grandma Harriets' family heirloom, a German beer stein from like 1908.
Should I blame the oldest one who is never in trouble, but should really have a lesson in unjust parental discipline. ( he is quite overdue).
Or should I blame the youngest one again, who just recently finished "his" punishment for breaking the mother in laws picture hanging in the den. ( hey, who knew Nerf dart guns could pack so much power )
I mean he is used to it anyway. So I'm thinking of strategically placing one of his toy projectiles up on the mantle as evidence. This should leave no doubt about his guilt.
Of course when she is not around, all punishments will be excused, cause I will be good Dad vs. mean Mom.
And really it is her fault anyway. That guy from Antique Roadshow told her how much it was worth. It should never been out in the open.
So, who should it be??
deevious--- why can't I be both?

My dad has an old record player he wants to give me. Only problem is the needle needs replaced. It is a realistic Lab-3000 precision turntable. I wrote down the numbers and letters on the stylus and cartridge. The numbers and letters are:

Shure RSEB
Realistic r47eb

I can't find an exact replacement because it's too old at least I think. Is there any equivalent to this stylus and cartridge I can buy? Or anywhere I can get the exact stylus? I'm pretty sure only the needle needs replaced. Everything else is in perfect condition. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Hi. I recently was given a second hand record player by a friend. I am ashamed to say that although i have listened to loads of vinyl records when i was a kid (my dad lost all his records and player during a move) i do not know anything about actually playing a record! i am 19 now. I have always loved the sound compared to cds and now i want to build up a vinyl collection from scratch. I still have one 7 inch record and another 12 inch one.My player Semi-automated turntable and has two speed knobes - 33and 45.and as far as i can see there is no needle on the edge of that handle thingy. its just a square like thing. Can someone explain what all this means very simply. I have spent hours online trying to read up on this but i have gotten even more confused with all the terms. what is EP and LP? what is 78 rpm, 45 rpm, 33⅓ rpm? what records should i buy? what player plays what kind of record? i can't ask my parents cause they are not around. Please please help me out. sorry if i sound stupid but this is a part of my childhood that i want back. thanks alot
My player is a semi-automated turntable Sherwood PD-701B

as for my budget..i don't really have one yet. as in I have to save to get what i want so preferably something reasonable and mid-priced.i cant tell you an exat price because i have no idea how much these things cause.as for music - I absolutely love the beatles, bob dylan and aerosmith.and some motown stuff- like smokey robinson. thanks alot for the help.

im just getting into the record scene and i have some records and they sound lk crap on my dad's old record player, people always say that vinyl sounds better than cd. im willing to invest some money on a good record player preferably something that i can connect to my hi-fi stereo. i have a budget of 0 for the player.

I grew up in the 60's &70's and dwant to regain a lot of the old records I used to have. I had lots of them from easy listening to hard rock. When I left home 2 weeks before I turned 18 I only go the clothes on my back. Now, My dad and step Mom are passed away and I have no way of getting or seeing if they had them. I have a record player. I love Music and love to sing.

I've got a record player that was handed down to me from my dad. It's really old, I've had it for around four years, and haven't replaced the needle yet. It's beginning to wear down, I've tried the penny trick, but I'd like to get a new needle some time soon. I'm having a lot of trouble taking the needle off. It seems like its all one unit, there's nothing for me to unscrew to take the whole cartridge off. Any tips? (I think it was probably made in the 70's/80's)

My dad just got my stepmom a new Silvertone antique radio, and it is model 111. It is a tube radio, and it has wooden dials and sliding doors that close on front of it. Unfortunately, we can't find our camera, so we don't have a picture of it. We think it's from the late 20's to early 30's, but if anybody happens to have an exact year, that would be awesome :)

i don't know a thing about record players but i was hoping to find one for my dad for christmas. i'm looking for something hopefully under 0 and preferably one that's antique looking. i found a nice looking 4-in-1 crosley rochester turntable but i read some mixed reviews on it so i'm not sure if i want to buy it. are there some other good brands? should i just get a modern one instead? thankss

My Dad has an old vinyl record player up in our attic that he said yesterday has needed a new needle for years. I was hoping someone could tell me where to buy one, and if I need to know the specifics of the needle/player.
I can't buy on eBay which was my first choice as I don't have a credit card of my own and would have to use my father's account instead which would wreck the surprise.
Does anyone know of somewhere online that I can order a record needle using my Laser Card and that would deliver to Ireland? And again, if I need to find out anything specific about the needle: size/manufacturer/ etc?

Thanks

Do you still use your old record player? I'm a teenager, but love listening to my dads old records on our oldfashioned record player. My dad literaly has over 1,000 records and all of the good old rock stuff. : )
