You had no written agreement between you and your ex. You also had your things stored on his property for quite a long time. I think you will have a hard time getting a judge to side with you. No one can expected to hold someone else's things indefinitely. It was your responsibility to get those things and yes, you were trying but when push came to shove and you found out what he was doing that day in question, you quickly went there to get your things, correct? so what was stopping you from getting there just as quickly months sooner? See what I mean? I only say this because the judge will say the same thing to you. It will also cost you a lot just to bring this lawsuit to court - filing fee, lost time, etc. I would just cut my loses and consider yourself lucky to be rid of him. Know in your heart that you will never make this mistake again, so lesson learned.
