Is starting a vinyl collection difficult?
For a while now, I didn't know that you could still purchase vinyl records of current music. My grandpa gave me this old turntable a few months ago and some of his old records from the '60s and such, and I ended up looking online only to discover that you could purchase some of today's music on vinyl. I got very excited, because I am into retro things and a vinyl collection sounds pretty cool to me.
But can anyone tell me if starting a vinyl collection will be very expensive? My grandpa's player is old as all get out, so I would want to purchase a new turntable and speakers. Best Buy is the only place in town I've found that even sells record players anymore, and the cheapest is a Sony for 9 or so. Do you have to spend a lot of money to get a good one, and will the sound be worse or better than CD quality? Also, how much do contemporary records run? The website I say had them for like or so, is that about average?
Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks. I really want to start this new hobby.
Since CDs and CD players took over the music industry in the late 80s, and vinyl faded away, there aren’t as many turntables available. Also not everywhere carries the new vinyl records. The demand for vinyl isn’t as high as the demand for cds, so vinyl records will probably be about the same price as cds or even a little higher. Buying vintage vinyl records could get expensive, depending on the albums you want and the condition of the records and the album covers.
i know someone who had just purchased a paramore and phantom planet vinyl for 12 dollars. i think its only the bands from like the 60s-80s that are expensive because well they are….retro or whatever. so if you wanna just buy current music it will be cheap. and the quality is great, way better then the cds.
Go on the street and break some clapboards and hang them to your show room!
No seriously, they are still making some nowadays ,because even though cds are popular, some think nothing beats old style. It’s pretty easy to get for the new ones and little harder for older ones.
its actually not, i made a collection just ine the past 3 years.. i suggest trying thrift stores and flee markets its amazing what you can come up on 80’s, 90, 70’s they have it all, the most you will spend is 3-4 dollars but in the end you will have a timless collection worth WAY more expesially if you keep them a long time with time the more thay are worth, ive come up my most valuable at thrift stores because trhey dont realize.
Top Five Things You Need to Know About Starting a Vinyl Collection:
1) Read HIGH FIDELITY by Nick Hornby. Don’t ask questions, just do it. If you’re lazy, watch the movie (it’s got John Cusack in it). I recommend both.
2) Check out pawnshops, anitque stores, and flea markets, those places not only have a turntable every once in a while, but millions of records, and some of them are fairly new.
3) Prices will vary on what sort of things you want. Newer vynils may not be too expensive, but there are a lot of versions of old vynils. If you want a real collection, your records are definitely going to vary in price. I like to check ‘em out at the flea markets. They rarely cost more than $3 and some people don’t know how valuable their merchandise is.
4) Vinyls sound much better than CDs. Basically, CDs are a puzzle and your head fills in missing pieces and puts the music together. You don’t recognize that miliseconds of music are missing. You would never notice that, but I’d guess overall, you’ll notice that vynil sounds better.
5) Be sure to rearrange your collection periodically and never stack ‘em. It’s time for shelves, my friend. Don’t get scared if they begin to take over your life. It’s better that way.
My dad has a turntable and I use it every once in a while, but I’ve never gotten into a real collection. This may have to do with the fact that I’m a seventeen year old girl, but who knows really? My collection of over 300 CDs will suffice for now, but we can start competing once I get a place of my own.
I hope you become addicted quickly, and I’d like an update on your search. Have fun.
you def. should start a collection. it is gonna be expensive but it’ll be worth it. you already have the turntable, i think that as long as you have good needles the turntable itself is not a big deal. you can go to guitar center or sam ash for better turntables. a top of the line player would be the technics 1200 ($450).
cd quality is better but i think records give you a unique sound that you can only get from vinyl.
records vary in cost. you should find a place around town that sells vinyl because its more fun to shop for them in person. albums will run $14, singles about $5-7.
hope i was helpful.
you need to hit wikapidia and go to record players, Wow we’ve come a long way, vinyl’s cheap unless it’s rare, and I’m suprised BB has a turntable that cheap, or even has one for that matter! Remember 8 track! and the beta max! uh oh looks like VCR may be next! turntables are cool, moving part’s we can see, dont sound like your Ipod though
