Lyricism - Rakim

Production - Tough one. So many producers have brought so many different things to the table. I could see the arguments for everyone the other answerers have mentioned plus a whole host of others - so I'm just going to be biased and go with the Bomb Squad because their sound (imo) remains the most distinctive and one of the most innovative.

Turntabalism - Kool Herc and Grand Wizard Theodore are the obvious choices I guess (along with Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa). More recently, Q-Bert and DJ Shadow.

I actually think in many ways production has advanced the furthest. But I suppose the most obvious advancement has been in lyricism.

Lyricism: Rakim
Production: RZA (kinda popularized chopped/looped vocal samples)
Turntablism: DJ S&S

I would say lyricism has made the biggest leap.

turntablism because no one cares if the lyrics have a good meaning, its all about if it has a great beat.

Lyricism: Rakim, for obvious reasons
Production: Dr. Dre, was the first to really get away from sampling and start making his own beats
Turntablism: don't know much about this but Kool Herc I guess. I know he was practically the first hip hop dj and came up with the break beat.

hmm, probably lyricism, though I wouldn't use mainstream artists to make that point. But lyricism as a whole has gotten better. Lyrics at the beginning of hip hop were pretty simple and the subject matter was mainly talking about how great you are.
