i have a Sony record player and Sony receiver that is hooked to my record player, DVD player, VCR and?
tape deck. I want to record my LP vinyles and I would like to record all that music on my lap top which is also sony viao, and then burn cd's for those reccords. can some one patiently explain how to do that. My lap top has cd burner. My thought is to have a lead go into the head phone socket of the reciever and other end plug in to red color mic socket. and than use the windows media player as recorder, is that possible, i am not tech savy but can apply my mind to it if there is some guidence.
I recorded all of my tapes to MP3 using the Free HQ Recorder.
I used a cord from audio out on a tape deck to line in on my P.C. You should be able to do the same with your LPs.
You can get a 1/4 inch mini plug to two R.C.A. plugs from Radio Shack. Here is a Link to that recorder:

Just to clarify what Scott E. said.

Unless your turntable has line outputs (built in preamp), which most likely it doesn’t, you need to have the phono outputs going into your receiver’s phono inputs. This is because phono inputs & outputs are different from line inputs & outputs & are not compatible.
Use the line outputs on your receiver (tape out, or tape 2 out, or MD out, or DAT out).

Actually it’s an 1/8" mini plug which is like what you see on an iPod, or Walkman headphone jack that your computer uses. A 1/4" plug is the larger plug like you see on microphones & the headphone jack on the front of most receivers. You can pick up the adapter at any place that sells audio equipment, computer store, or big box discount store.
