I have a Sears Stereo (it only plays records.) It makes a loud noise when I turn it on. How do I fix this?
It is older and plays 16's, 33's, 48's etc. It is electric. The record player opens in the middle(folds down) and the speakers open up on the sides.
If the noise you hear is a very loud hum, then the filter capacitors in the amplifier power supply have failed and will need replacing. If the noise is a crashing, sputtering sound, then it could well be a bad connection, or possibly bad coupling capacitors in the amp. The previous poster has a good point…check wiring and connections first. Also look at the connections that go to the cartridge (the device that the needle is held in). You will see four very fine wires and four slip-on connectors that fit onto pins on the cartridge. If one of these is loose, all sorts of noises will be heard.
