How do I hook a turntable up 2 my computer?
I want to be able to play an old childrens album (45), but obviously need a record player. So, when I buy the turntable, how do I hook it up? Can I hook it up to play through my computer's speakers via onboard audio? Or do I need a separate receiver?
you need to buy a USB turntable. The output is already digital, no need to convert to digital.
however, if you find an old record player. the output is very low level audio. You will need a pre-amp to drive the line-in on your computer.
on the pre-amp, there is a "phono" input. Plug the turntable into these. Also, make sure you ground the turntable or you will induce hum.
from the pre-amp out, you need to use an adapter to go from the RCA type connectors to the 1/8inch stereo input on the computer.
Go got a shareware software called Audacity. This is a powerful editor.
Usually there is a LINE-IN socket in your computer where you can attach external devices like that. You just need to buy a cable with a stereo headphone jack on one end and two RCA jacks on the other.
You don’t need a USB turntable.
Just get one with a line out, or a separate pre-amp, and an RCA to 1/8" cable to connect to your computer line in.
If the turntable has a built in pre-amp, then it is ready to feed into the computer’s sound card "line-in". some newer models have USB which can connect to the computer as a sound device.
If the turntable does not, then you need a special phonograph pre-amp which includes the RIAA equalization. Older receivers had a phono input, that would be the way to go. Feed the computer with the "tape-out" or "monitor-out" from the receiver.
