How do I fix my record player’s volume?
Hi!
I have a general electric stereo, phonograph, 8 track system. Now, the volume works, but it doesn't work correctly.
When I pop the on and off knob out, which is also the volume knob, I receive a lot of static and "pop" from the speaker. Only one speaker seems to be having any sound. Sometimes when I use the stereo both speakers work. This tells me both speakers work. But when I use the phonograhp or record player, it mutes the left side speaker.
This system is about 37 years old. It's clean inside and out, the record player works fine. The only problem is the volume.
That's as much information as I can provide.
Thank you in advance!
I’ve had the exact same problem with my modern turntable and stereo/speakers. The turntable seems to be working fine, and when I play digital music through the stereo, both speakers work; but then when I use the turntable, one of the speakers mutes sometimes! So I’m baffled; it doesn’t seem like it’s the speakers, but I don’t see how it could be the turntable. Hopefully someone can help us out!
Go to RadioShack and ask for a spray can of "tuner cleaner". Unplug the stereo. Pull the volume knob off. Carefully use the straw that came with the spray to spray the cleaner down the control shaft, while turning the volume control all the way up and down several times. Replace the volume knob. Plug the unit back in. Try now
My suggestion: When you say that the left speaker doesn’t work and it’s muted, do you have a low buzzing sound coming from it? (Because mine does that). Or is it completely silent?
My problem: How strange! My record player does the same thing. This happened because I accidently dropped the needle on the record player (fingers slipped on the grip). But yes, my sound does the same thing, it’s fine when it’s on radio but when I try to play a record sound only comes out of one speaker. I don’t think it’s the turn table because there wasn’t any major pressure put on to it. But my guess would be the needle. (I’ve tried sticking a penny on the head (with tape) but that doesn’t work.) Any suggestion?
