A turntable also should not be plugged into a tape monitor input because the output voltage level of the cartridge picking up the music is lower than that of the output level of a tape player. You would only hear a low level garble. However, if all you have is a stereo with tape monitor inputs, places like Radio Shack usually have a millivoltage boosting "phono to tape monitor" transformer below $20 to match them up.
