How about a blast from the past?
What was the first 45 rpm record you ever bought?
Remember playing your 45's on one of those little portable suitcase type record players and you lost the thingy to hold your record in place and you would try to place it just right to play without it sounding all distorted?
Oh, and let's not forget putting on your 45's and setting the speed on 78rpm so you could laugh at your favorite artists sounding like the chipmunks
I always lose my thingys
WOW. SO MANY GREAT ANSWERS I DON'T KNOW WHO TO CHOSE.
I noticed some answers got thumbs down.
What's with that? How can you thumbs down somebody's fond memories of things that made them happy?
"Sunny" by Bobby Hebb. Wore it out and had to buy a second copy.
Bird Dog by the Everly Brothers. I still play my LP’s on my turn table, they have a better sound than Cd’s.
Yes. Two songs. The A side and the B side. The records came in paper sleeves. And for some reason I still don’t understand, the record players had two needles, one for the 45’s and 78’s and the other for the Long Playng 33 and one third RPMs. (I’d rather not mention the first songs I bought on 45’s. Too embarrassing.)
Teresa Brewer, Kay Star, Davis Sisters, Patty Page, Rosemary Clooney. Life was good in the 50s.
help me rhonda, beach boys.
The first record player I had was one of those portable ones which I sat on the bed to listen to my first new record. The top fell down and broke both sides off the record. That ended that madness. I was so angry and not rich, so I just listened to them on TV and radio from then on and did not put any more money into them. I remember setting the speed differently though, and listening to how funny it sounded. Simple pleasures we had, huh?
I remember all of the above. My parents liked music and what I really remember was visiting my beloved grandma and she had a victrola and the one record I remember her having was Vaughn Monroe.
The best thing to come out was the 331/3 , albums, with several songs on each side.
When I moved up here to the WI tundra over 20 yrs ago, I sold a large box of albums for $20 to a man who was trying hard to contain his happiness. lol
It was Ricky Nelson singing "Poor Little Fool". What a memory! I used to have a little round container that held the 45’s — looked sort of like a small angle food cake holder with a cover that fit over the whole thing. Whoa, thanks for the memories!
I think the first 45 I bought was "Fun, Fun, Fun" … -Beach Boys-
The first song I waited near the radio to be played was "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore".
My earliest memory of adopting a song as my fav was a 45 my Dad had … "Old Black Joe".
Lots of memories playing 45s on the hi fi then stereo.
I vaguely remember trying to play them w/o the "thingy" … lol
I dont remember the actual song but it was by Elvis. I remember that we would go down to the Music Box and take the 45 into the listening room before buying the record. I am not sure but it cost about 49 cents.
"Love Me Do" by the Beatles. Wore it out!
In my defense I was 6
Please Mr. Custer - Larry Verne

A great question.I can’t think of the first 45 I bought.I do remember my grandparents getting me Paul Anka’s "My Home Town".
Yes I do remember the suitcase record players. The "thingy" you are referring to was a 45 adapter for those too poor to afford the cartridge that was slipped over the spindle.
You brought back a lot of happy memories.
I don’t remember the first, but I had plenty of records by the Monkees, the Doors, Ricky Nelson, Nancy Sinatra (These boots are made for walkin", I listened to lots of different stuff. I had a portable stereo, with 2 detachable speakers I hung on the wall, well, I’m sure my Dad did that. I can remember turning the speed up on some records, sounds really funny. And yes, my parents would tell me TURN THAT MUSIC DOWN! Just like I do with my teen. What go’s around comes around!
The first I can think of with my very own pennies was Rockin Goose - Johnny & the Hurricanes.
I had quite a few before then and the first I really liked was:Nothin’Shakin’ (but the leaves on a tree) - Eddie Fontain. It’s still on of my favourites
I never had a portable,I went straight from those needle things that played 78’s to a furniture style record player
My mom had lots of 78’s, she loved music. I think some of her collection still exists with one of my children. I don’t remember buying many 45’s, Maybe the Three Bells. When I was buying my own, by then it was 33 and 1/3. I remember so many of those, Belafonte, Kingston Trio, and so many albums from musicals such as Oklahoma, The King and I, and so many more.
I think it was Rag Doll by The Four Seasons. The flip side, or B side was Silence is Golden. Released in July of 1964. That year, my mom bought the album, Meet the Beatles for me. (It cost about 3.00,) but the Four Seasons was my first 45. Other 45s I bought during 1964 were:
Bread and Butter by The NewBeats
Because and Bits and Pieces by the Dave Clark Five
Little Children by Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas
Walk On By by Dionne Warrick
Haunted House by Gene Simmons.
My portable record player was a used one. It played 45, 331/3, and 78s. the outer material that covered the player was green. Mom bought it at a used store my uncle owned, for a few dollars. I had forgotten all about that thingy you put in the middle to play 45s on. I don’t remember what that was called. I never lost mine though. To do so surely would have ended my 45s playing. I held on to it for dear life. You know there is nothing like that scratchy sound of a vinyl playing. It may have been somewhat irritating at the time, but that sound sure would bring back a lot of memories now. Remember how we played 45s on a 78 speed to sound like the Chipmunks. lol Those were simple and more innocent times for sure. That is so wild. After I posted my answer I see you added the same thing I did at the end of my answer concerning the chimpmunk sound. lol Great minds think alike? lol
