Hip-hop culture has five pillars: emceeing (rapping), break-dance, graffiti, turntablism and beat-boxing.

It began in New York City around the 1970's with predominantly African-Americans and Latino-Americans. Hip-hop started out in the inner cities as a fun form of allowing inner-city citizens to express themselves. In the beginning there really wasn't a negative attribute to this genre; it involved people speaking about the environment in which they lived and it was used in a way to uplift these souls.

Nowadays people (mainly rappers) have characteristics in their style of dress because those early pioneers dressed in sporty clothes and wore jewelery that was stolen

The most popular hip-hop years were the 90's when rappers such as: Tupac Shakur, Dr.Dre, Snoop Dog, Jay-Z, and others were popularizing this underground music style. In addition, Tupac was murdered by unidentified gentry in 1996. This made the hip-hop world evaluate the violence its music brought. This is thought to be the reason that Notorious B.I.G was murdered. Some think that it was in vengeance of the death of his rival, Tupac.

Also in the 90's Southern hip-hop, or rap from the 'Dirty South' emerged. The name implies that this form was created because regular rap was pure and southern-rap became extremely commercialized due to the money for its sound. Southern rap did not have much to do with the roots of hip-hop and therefore gained a following. In spite of all of this, there are actually many talented Southern urban-artists.

In addition Jamaican dancehall-reggae is a root of hip-hop because of many of the early pioneers ( DJ Herc) and newer rappers (Busta Rhymes, Notorious B.I.G and Redman). All of these examples were or are Jamaican immigrants or children of Jamaican immigrants in New York. There is no need to look far to see the relationship between the two. We now see rap and dancehall-reggae merging. This would not be possible if there were not the similarities of a child beginning to return to his or her parent.

Jamaican dejaying came out of a form of rhyming and talking over music, also called toasting. But rapping also began as a variation on the toasting. Many of the artists involved in the birth of the rap in New York were either Jamaican or have Jamaican parentage, as stated before. Today people such as: Beanie Man, Elephant Man, and Sean Paul are influencing rap.Without a doubt, Jamaican deejay style was the foundation for American rap music and needs to be recognized as such.

One more genre music that hip hop includes is the blues. The blues is a style of syncopated jazz that originated from the early lamenting folk music of African-Americans and is characterized by the repeated use of flat notes. Many blues fans and artists have gone on record attacking rap. Some have undoubtedly thought their arguments through in detail, but all too many have just come off as knee-jerk conservatives. These people dismissed hip-hop without ever stopping to listen and give the hip-hop style a fair chance.
