1960’s is not antique. Yes you need to sand or use a chemical stripper and then sand before staining.
What kind is it? I know a little about older audio equipment. And furniture finishing.
Maybe a picture? Be happy to help with a little more info.
First of all if its a true antique in good condition don’t touch the finish or its value will drop to nothing.
Second if you really don’t care, then yes, sand it down as much as possible, use a damp cloth and get all the dust off. Stain it very lightly, let dry, sand and repeat three times or until you get the desired color. Finish with a thin coat of polyurethane and sand lightly and repeat that process also for a perfect finish.
