Can I make my computer into a DJ mixer?
Can I make my computer into a DJ mixer as in sending one audio signal to some headphones and another one to the speakers, so that I can use with a virtual DJ software such as Traktor? If you know of a certain software or hardware other than a mixer (let's say a soundboard) that could help me feel free to post!
without additional hardware and a capable soundcard it is almost impossible to get a realistic DJ board from a PC. So you can check for very talented multichannel I/O sound cards to install in your PCs PCI bus or externally via USB. just type multchannel I/O in google to get a name
Latency and multichannel hardware I/O will be the most important of two factors that will effect your success.
Latency in simple means is a kind of response time of your PC + OS + Sound Card, for PC and OS you have litle to do other than standart hardware, be lucky enough todays PC hardware will be capable of real time multichannel IO.. but you still should look for "effects" processing software routine and possibly Soundcard audio processing delay… It is naturally complicated and you may get some satisfactory results with carefully designed software and soundcard hardware…
For multichannel hardware I/O you have to look for sound card that supports it. Todays OS are already supporting 16/24/32 bit soft multichannel processing. And virtually all audio software are designed with regard to this.
Last comment, I am hardly skeptical about getting a real and satisfactory feeling from such a PC device… Real time multichannel I/O with audio effects.. but is worth trying,

I think the hardware decides where the signal goes (if you plug in headphones, the signal goes there instead of the speakers) but you could buy a soundcard with multiple outputs or a splitter.
Most people may not know it but virtually all radio stations are running off PC’s for the music and studio control.
It takes several sound cards and the right programs but it is easily done.
