There are 2 major formats for recordable mediums with DVD recordable discs, DVD+R and DVD-R unfortunately not all drives and players support both formats, try the burned disc in the recorder to see if it plays in the recorder first if this works then you know that your computers DVD-ROM/DVDR is not compatable with DVD-R discs. Also most likely many of your VHS tapes if they are store bought tapes will not copy to DVD properly due to macrovision. This is why when people ask me about set top box DVD recorders I usually steer people away from them, they are generally only good for recording TV shows and home movies.
